Stress, Anxiety and Depression
Undue Stress, anxiety and depression are all problems which sap energy and motivation, and so impede our ability to enjoy life.
Stress is closely related to life circumstances and external pressures, and overstress affects at least one in seven of the population.
A survey conducted in 2022 found that young adults aged between 18 and 24 were more likely to suffer from moderate to severe stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms. That year, around 66 percent of respondents from this age group reported stress-related symptoms, while 25 percent of those aged 65 and older had similar symptoms. Middle aged people reported their workplace as the most significant source of stress.
When experienced long-term, the fight and flight hormones related to extreme stress can lead to a variety of physical problems. Solutions are found in working to reduce external pressures, and in learning new and more flexible responses to stressful situations. As a result of stress, three major brain chemicals can go out of balance and result in sleeplessness, lack of enjoyment in life and fatigue or listlessness. These are Serotonin, which is essential to maintain our body clock and healthy sleeping rhythms, Dopamine, which is directly related to our feelings of pleasure in life and Noradrenaline, which regulates energy in the body, Stress responses can relate to a life trauma, which may result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PSTD can be a constant barrier to living a full and satisfying life and can be experienced by anyone. It can be the consequence of verbal, physical or sexual abuse, rape or a sexual attack, or other traumatic experience.
